Born in Iowa City, Iowa, Brett Baber has established deep roots in the Pine Tree State. He is a 1982 summa cum laude graduate with a political science degree from the University of Southern Maine. In 1985, Mr. Baber graduated magna cum laude from the University of Maine School of Law where he served as a research editor for the Maine Law Review.
Mr. Baber spent the first fifteen years of his career as a civil litigation defense attorney with firms in Portland and Bangor. In addition to his legal practice, he served on the adjunct faculty at Husson College and the University of Maine in Bangor. In 2000, he opened his own plaintiffs’ personal injury firm. Building on that experience, he became employed at Lanham Blackwell in 2007 to provide litigation support and to enhance his ability to effectively represent individuals in personal injury, pharmaceutical products litigation and employment discrimination cases. The majority of his current practice is devoted to serving employees who have experienced various forms of employment discrimination, to representation of individuals injured by defective medical products and medication, and to individuals who have suffered a personal injury. Mr. Baber is admitted to practice in all Maine courts, the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit where he has served on the selection committee for Criminal Justice Act appeals counsel, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
Having served on the Board of Governors of the Maine State Bar Association since 1998, Mr. Baber was selected as the President of Maine’s largest legal organization in 2008. Mr. Baber has written numerous articles on litigation and insurance topics in the Maine Bar Journal and he has presented on several continuing legal education topics, including several panels regarding employment discrimination claims. During his tenure on the MSBA Board of Governors, Mr. Baber addressed the serious need for representation of indigent Maine residents by developing the biannual symposium on access for justice, serving on the court commission that developed the indigent criminal defense commission, and by developing a model for what later became the Katahdin Counsel program. At Mr. Baber’s suggestion, the MSBA created the Vincent McKusick Award for legal scholarship in the Maine Bar Journal.
In 2009, Mr. Baber was awarded The Lew Vafiades Pro Bono award by The Volunteer Lawyers Project of Maine for his efforts to organize a free legal clinic in Penobscot County. Mr. Baber is a member of the Penobscot Bar Association, the Maine Trial Lawyers Association and the American Association for Justice. New England Super Lawyers has designated Mr. Baber as a “Super Lawyer” in 2011, 2012 and 2013.
Mr. Baber lives in Dedham with his wife, Gayle. They have four children. Avocations include serving as a public address announcer for the University of Maine football, hockey and basketball teams. He enjoys golf, skiing, coaching youth basketball and community service through the Knights of Columbus. From 2009-2011, Mr. Baber served as the Grand Knight of the Bangor area Knights of Columbus. He is a Eucharistic Minister, a lector and a member of the adult choir at St. Paul the Apostle Parish in Bangor.
