James J. Barnes

James J. Barnes is an associate attorney with Fahrendorf, Viloria, Oliphant & Oster L.L.P., practicing primarily in the area of divorce and family law.

Prior to joining Fahrendorf, Viloria, Oliphant & Oster L.L.P., Mr. Barnes practiced as a Deputy District Attorney in Lander County, Nevada, where he represented the County by prosecuting various misdemeanor, gross misdemeanor and felony crimes, including, but not limited to, DUI, domestic violence, burglary and battery. Additionally, Mr. Barnes represented the County with regard to civil matters, including civil litigation defense, drafting and analyzing contracts and representing the County Commissioners and the various County Departments. Mr. Barnes also served as the Deputy Public Guardian and Deputy Public Administrator in Lander County.

Mr. Barnes attended law school at the William S. Boyd School of Law at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. While there, he taught classes on the divorce process in Nevada, was invited to serve on the school’s Society of Advocates team and participated in the National Moot Court Competition in San Francisco, California.

Mr. Barnes is originally from Northern Nevada, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Finance with High Distinction from the University of Nevada and received the Top Finance Student Award for his graduating class. Mr. Barnes is a member of the Washoe County Bar Association and is admitted to practice before all Nevada courts.
