G. Oliver Koppell is a former Attorney General of the State of New York and has represented clients ranging from individuals to some of America's largest corporations. Oliver litigates in trial and appellate courts across the country and his practice includes employment law and complex business matters as well as consumer class actions and major personal injury cases. As an appellate litigator, Oliver has argued in the New York Court of Appeals, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States.
In the 1990s, Oliver served as Attorney General of the State of New York, heading an office of over 400 lawyers. As Attorney General, Oliver initiated dozens of public interest lawsuits, collected over $100,000,000 for the state treasury, and negotiated the largest environmental settlement in the history of New York.
Prior to his service as Attorney General, Oliver was a member of the New York State Legislature where he authored over 280 laws, including the New York State Returnable Container Act ("the Bottle Bill"), the Eminent Domain Procedure Law, the Adult Guardian Law, revisions of the Business Corporation Law, and the Home Energy Fair Practices Act. As Chair of the Assembly Judiciary Committee, Oliver was responsible for all legislation affecting the operation of the New York State Court System. During the 2000s, Oliver served three terms as a member of the New York City Council, representing the Riverdale section of the Bronx.
Oliver is a 1965 graduate of Harvard Law School and began his legal career at the distinguished New York firm of Cravath, Swaine & Moore. Oliver was named a Super Lawyer in the years 2013 and 2014.
Oliver is admitted to practice in New York State, in the United States District Courts for the Southern and Eastern District of New York, in the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and in the Supreme Court of the United States.
