Mark Wertz was assigned to me as a public defender in 2018 in a misdemeanor case. In quite a departure from other public defenders I’ve had, Mark impressed me right off the bat by coming to see me in person at the jail. No empty promises, excuses or no shows from Mark. He showed up on time, every time, a rarity for a public defender. He listened attentively and put his knowledge of the system to work for me not with arrogance but with compassion and understanding. Long story short, he did his job well and I was subsequently released from custody. I thanked the man for a job well done and he left me in a state of amazement with his parting words. I don’t remember his exact words but they went something like this: My brother deals with addiction so I’m familiar with the devastation it can cause in an addict’s life and that of his family. If you’re ever in a bad way and you really need someone to talk to, stop by my office by McDonalds and I’ll try to make time for you. That’s called character and Mark Wertz has it.
