Arend Abel was born in Muncie, Indiana, in 1960. He grew up in Union City, Indiana, and graduated from Union City Community High School in 1978.
Arend graduated with honors from Ball State University in 1982, where he was a National Merit Scholar and Whitinger Scholar. Following graduation, he taught high school for a year before attending Indiana University School of Law in Bloomington. He graduated with honors there also, and was a member of the school's national moot court team, as well as an Edwards Fellow and Vice-Presidential Scholar.
Arend's hobbies include gardening and fine wines. Arend has been active in the community, particularly in school matters. He is a former president and board member of the Metropolitan School District of Washington Township Parent Council.
