Charlie Bailey is an 8th generation Georgian from Harris County, Georgia, who has spent his career fighting for those that have been wronged by others. He joined Cook & Connelly to continue that fight.
In 2018, Charlie was chosen by Georgia’s Democratic primary voters as the nominee for the statewide office of Attorney General. Despite running against an incumbent appointed by the Governor and supported by the powerful interests at the state Capitol, he received a higher percentage of the vote than any other down ballot statewide Democratic candidate by promising to fight against corrupt politicians, consumer fraud, opioid producers, predatory debt collectors, and violent criminal gangs.
Before his campaign for Attorney General, Charlie served as a Senior Assistant District Attorney in Fulton County. At the DA’s office, Charlie tried cases against some of Georgia’s most dangerous criminals charged with crimes like murder, kidnapping, and armed robbery. He served in the organized crime & gang unit, where he worked with federal, state, and local law enforcement to break up criminal gangs engaged in human trafficking, drug trafficking, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.
Before his time as a prosecutor, Charlie worked as an attorney in the law firm founded and managed by former Governor Roy Barnes. He worked with Governor Barnes representing Georgians who were hurt by the wrongdoing of others, including victims of medical malpractice, school teachers who were wrongfully denied their retirement benefits, and small businesses who were taken advantage of by big corporations.
Charlie grew up on his family’s cattle farm in Harris County in west Georgia. He attended the University of Georgia, becoming the 4th generation in his family to do so. Charlie graduated with Honors, earning Bachelor of Arts degrees in Religion and Political Science. He went on to attend the University of Georgia’s Law School, where he was elected by his peers to serve as president of the student body. While in school, Charlie was inducted to the National Order of the Barristers and was named a Pupil in the Joseph Henry Lumpkin Inn of Court. He was a member of the Mock Trial Team, competing in the Tournament of Champions in New York City in his 3rd year. Charlie also won both the J. Ralph Beaird Closing Argument Competition and UGA Law’s J. Melvin England Mock Trial Competition.
Charlie is a founding board member of Amplify My Community, a non-profit whose mission is to leverage the universal love of music to address poverty and homelessness at the local level. Since 2012, Amplify has raised and donated more than $350,000 from music festivals, concerts, and events.
Charlie resides in the Old 4th Ward neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia. When not in the office, he enjoys all things UGA, the Falcons, the Braves, the Hawks, Atlanta United, live music, reading, and traveling.
