Derek was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawai`i, graduating from Punahou School, receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the University of Hawai`i at Manoa, and his Juris Doctorate from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. Derek is a member of the Hawaii State Bar Association, the HSBA's Business Law, Probate, Elder Law, and Real Estate Sections, and the Hawaii Estate Planning Council. Prior to entering private practice, Derek worked for the Business Registration Division of the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs.Dereks practice focuses on small business matters, wills and trusts, and probate.
