Dustin carried his passion for Latin America with him to college at Brigham Young University, where he studied comparative literature with an emphasis on Latin American literature. During his undergraduate studies Dustin travelled to Lake Atitlan, Guatemala where he lived with an indigenous family, learned to speak K'iche', and wrote his honors thesis on Mayan literature.
