Attorney Eric Utermohlen joined McCathern's Houston office in 2017 and he focuses his legal practice on bankruptcy, business litigation, commercial litigation, real estate litigation, corporate services, and oil & gas legal matters.
Eric graduated summa cum laude and fifth in his class from South Texas College of Law Houston. While in law school, Eric was a member of the Phi Delta Phi National Honor Society and of CURRENTS: Journal of International Economic Law, where he served as its Editor-in-Chief. Eric was awarded the CALI Award for Highest Grade in eight classes, including Secured Transactions, Civil Procedure, and Business Bankruptcy & Reorganization. Eric graduated magna cum laude from Sewanee: The University of the South, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in International and Global Studies - Global Relations and a minor in Spanish.
Eric worked at McCathern as a law clerk during his last year of law school. During this time, he gained valuable experience attending hearings, conducting research and discovery, and assisting with trial preparation in both state court and bankruptcy court matters. While assisting with pretrial motion practice, some of his duties included drafting motions, petitions, discovery, and subpoenas. Prior to McCathern, Eric clerked for another local law firm and for a private hospital group in Houston.
Born of Dominican parents and raised in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Eric speaks English and Spanish fluently. He moved to the United States at 16 to attend boarding school in Virginia, from there he attended college in Tennessee, and finally settled in Houston. Eric draws on his unique experiences and knowledge to better understand and serve his clients, making him a great addition to the McCathern team.
In his free time, Eric enjoys discovering new restaurants with his wife, running outdoors, and spending time with his cats.
