In 2011, Ms. Sgarlato became a community advocate for students in Staten Island. She filed a lawsuit against the New York City Department of Education for denying school bus services to 7th and 8th graders. As a result of Ms. Sgarlato’s passionate advocacy, bus service was restored for the students.
