Attorney Karl received her B.A. from Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire in 1977. She received her Juris Doctorate from Washington University School of Law, St. Louis, Missouri in 1982, where she was on the staff of the Urban Law Annual, an environmental law review. Prior to returning to New Hampshire in 1987, Lucy practiced in Chicago, Illinois, with the firms of Karon, Morrison & Savikas and Sachnoff, Weaver & Rubenstein. Her Chicago practice was in the area of securities fraud class actions and complex business litigation.
A shareholder of the firm, Lucy's practice includes complex business litigation and arbitration, healthcare law, corporate governance, First Amendment, internal investigations and compliance reviews, securities fraud, and other business matters. Lucy has represented numerous individuals and corporations in fraud and abuse investigations in the securities, healthcare and general corporate arenas. Upon the recommendation of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, Ms. Karl has served as receiver of a failed brokerage firm. She has served as an arbitrator in securities, complex business and employment disputes for over fifteen years. She is an arbitrator for the National Association of Securities Dealers, the New York Stock Exchange and the American Arbitration Association. Most recently, Ms. Karl has been asked to serve on a task force working with the New Hampshire Bureau of Securities Regulations to review the proposed Uniform Securities laws and make recommendation to the State legislature regarding the overhaul of the State Securities laws.
She is a member of the Illinois and New Hampshire Bars, the Federal Bars for the Northern District of Illinois, the District of New Hampshire, First Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court.
Lucy has an active First Amendment practice, representing publishing houses and nationally recognized authors in defamation actions, and newspapers. Together with her partner, Steven Gordon, she successfully defended former Buffalo Bill's quarterback, Jim Kelly, in a defamation action brought by Kelly's former attorney and agent in the Federal District Court for the District of New Hampshire and Jonathan Harr, author of the New York Times best-seller, A Civil Action, and his publisher, Random House, in a defamation action. Both cases were affirmed on appeal by the First Circuit. Riley v. Harr, 292 F.3d 282 (1st Cir. 2002), Fayin v. Kelly, 184 F.3rd 67 (1st Cir. 1999).
Lucy has been active in non-profit organizations throughout her career. While in Chicago, she was a volunteer for the American Civil Liberties Union Reproductive Rights Project. Lucy serves as vice chair of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, an internationally renowned organization committed to providing safe and affordable access to reproductive health care.
