      Biography

      Morgan Akin is a trial lawyer and is co-owner Akin & Tate, P.C., one of the oldest continuous family practices in the United States. The firm was established in 1836 by Morgan's great grandfather. Morgan and his five ancestors have provided legal advice and counsel to citizens of Bartow County and northwest Georgia for over 170 years. Morgan and his father Warren Akin joined with Lester Tate to form the firm Akin & Tate, P.C. in 1996.

      Morgan is a veteran trial lawyer who practices primarily in the areas of plaintiff's personal injury, business and commercial litigation, estate litigation, and real estate litigation. A former special assistant Attorney General representing the Georgia Department of Transportation. Morgan now represents landowners against the DOT and other condemning authorities in eminent domain cases. He also does business formations, wills and estates, and adoptions.

      Morgan is a member of the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. He served on the Board of Governors of the State Bar of Georgia from 1994 through 1996. He has been appointed by the Georgia Supreme Court to be a Special Master in disciplinary proceedings and by superior courts to serve as Special Master in a number of real estate litigation eases.

      Born in Cartersville in 1949, Morgan graduated with high honors and as star student at Cartersville High School in 1967. He received a BA in English from Emory University in 1971 where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He attended the University of Georgia School of Law on a full scholarship, served as member and associate editor of the Georgia Law Review, and graduated in 1974 with high honors. On his graduation from college, Morgan was commissioned as second lieutenant in the United States Air Force and was named a distinguished military graduate. He served in the Air Force reserve following law school, attaining the rank of captain.

      After graduating from law school and a brief tour in the Air Force, Morgan returned to Cartersville in 1974 where he has been in the active practice of law since. Active in community affairs, Morgan has headed the United Way campaign, the Heart Association campaign, was named Jaycee's Young Man of the Year, and was president of the Cartersville/Bartow County Chamber of Commerce in 1988. He is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Bartow County Bank. Akin & Tate, P.C. (and its predecessor) serves as general counsel for that bank.

      Morgan is married to the former Deborah Hogg of Greenville, South Carolina. Between them they have five adult children and three grandchildren. Morgan's daughter Peggy joined the firm in 2007, and is the fifth generation of Akins to practice law.
