Robert J. Cousins is the managing partner of the Ft. Myers office of Quintairos, Prieto, Wood & Boyer, P.A., and also has an active practice in the firm's Ft. Lauderdale office. Mr. Cousins specializes in civil trials and has been Board Certified in Civil Trial Law by the Florida Bar Board of Legal Specialization since 1994. Mr. Cousins' experience as a trial lawyer in Florida spans over 30 years. His practice is focused in the areas of medical malpractice, including the representation of nursing homes, assisted living facilities and hospitals; his practice also encompasses the areas of legal malpractice, professional liability, products liability, insurance defense, and general liability; additionally, he is also called upon to defend clients in catastrophic injury and wrongful death cases.
Previously, Mr. Cousins was a partner with Stephens, Lynn, Klein, LaCava & Puya, P.A., in Ft. Lauderdale where he focused his practice in civil litigation trials.
Mr. Cousins was admitted to The Florida Bar in 1980, he is also admitted in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Florida (1981); U.S. Court of Appeals Eleventh Circuit; and the U.S. Supreme Court.
Mr. Cousins served on the Ethics Committee of the Florida Bar from 1993-94. He has been very active throughout his career in bar associations and claims industry organizations, particularly in the area of medical malpractice defense. His professional memberships also include the Broward County Bar Association, Florida Defense Lawyers Association (President 1997); Florida Medical Malpractice Claims Council (President 2002-03); Defense Research Institute (recipient of the Exceptional Performance Citation award); Florida Liability Claims Institute (Chairman, inaugural program); and Professional Liability Underwriting Society. Mr. Cousins was nominated and elected as a member of the International Association of Defense Counsel, where he served on the Medical Malpractice Committee and the Legal Malpractice Committee; he is also recognized in Florida Super Lawyers magazine (2008-present).
Mr. Cousins has written extensively on a wide range of litigation topics, and is the author of a book chapter in The Defense Speaks: A Litigation Manual for Defense Attorneys. He is a frequent lecturer to industry professionals, trade associations, physicians and clients on topics relating to litigation, medical liability, risk management, and trends in the law. Mr. Cousins has been a longstanding lecturer at Florida Bar continuing legal education seminars on many subjects including the prevention of legal malpractice claims and risk management.
Mr. Cousins received his Juris Doctor from Nova Southeastern University, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in 1980 and his Bachelor of Arts from LeMoyne College in Syracuse, New York in 1972, where he was a member of the National Jesuit Honor Society, Alpha Sigma Nu.
