Thomas A. Valdez is a partner in the Tampa office of Quintairos, Prieto, Wood & Boyer, P.A. Mr. Valdez focuses his practice on the defense of long term care, medical malpractice, legal malpractice, general liability, commercial and construction claims in both state and federal courts. He has successfully represented clients in litigation, alternative dispute resolution, trial, and appellate matters.
Mr. Valdez serves as Chair of the firm’s Appellate Practice Group, which provides clients with both traditional appellate services and proactive trial support services, and devotes a significant portion of his practice to appellate matters. Mr. Valdez also devotes a significant portion of his practice to litigating and trying cases as a member of the firm’s Litigation and Trial Practice Group.
During the course of his career, Mr. Valdez has litigated and tried cases in courts throughout the state; and has argued cases in all five of Florida’s District Courts of Appeal and the Florida Supreme Court. Mr. Valdez’ victories include a recent appellate victory in Benjamin v. Tandem Health Care, Inc., a case in which the Florida Supreme Court held that Article 10, Section 25, Florida Constitution (“Amendment 7”), did not apply to “nursing homes” or “skilled nursing facilities.”
Mr. Valdez has written a number of articles and has lectured extensively on health care issues at the local, state and national level. He has been a guest speaker at several conferences attended by health care industry groups, health care professionals, attorneys and clients.
Mr. Valdez first joined Quintairos, McCumber, Prieto & Wood, P.A., in 1998, and became a partner in 2002. In 2003, he left the firm to become a founding partner in the firm of McCumber, Inclan, Daniels, Valdez, Buntz & Ferrera, P.A., before returning to Quintairos, Prieto, Wood & Boyer, P.A., in 2006.
A 1991 graduate of the University of Florida, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration (Finance), Mr. Valdez earned his Juris Doctor magna cum laude from the Florida State University College of Law in 1997. During law school, he served as the President of the Florida State University Moot Court Team, was an active member of the Spanish-American Law Student Association, and was recognized for outstanding advocacy (Inductee, Order of the Barristers), leadership (Inductee, Seminole Torchbearer’s Leadership Honorary) and pro bono work.
Mr. Valdez is a member of The Florida Bar, the Pennsylvania Bar, the Hillsborough County Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. He is also admitted in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.
