      Biography

      Thomas R. Donohue is a partner with Brody, Hardoon, Perkins & Kesten, LLP. He is an experienced trial and appellate lawyer who represents clients in all stages of litigation in both state and federal courts. He concentrates primarily in the areas of civil rights claims/police misconduct law, employment law, and personal injury. He has won numerous judgments on behalf of municipal police officers and Town officials at both the motion to dismiss and summary judgment stages, and has obtained defense verdicts both at trial and after appeal in the First Circuit Court of Appeals and the Massachusetts Appeals Court. In 2015, Mr. Donohue obtained a favorable defense verdict in Worcester Superior Court after a teacher with the Fitchburg Public Schools claimed she was discriminated against on the basis of her race. He also had the Appeals Court reverse a Federal Court decision involving the Falmouth Police Department in a case where the Plaintiff alleged excessive force was used during his arrest. The matter was dismissed after the Appeals Court sided with the police officers and determined the force used was appropriate. Already in 2016, Mr. Donohue has obtained summary judgment for the Salem Public Schools after a teacher there alleged age and race discrimination. in February of 2016, he successfully defended the Chief of Police for the Town of Bridgewater in an Appeals Court case involving the denial of a license to carry renewal application. Most recently, in April of 2016, Mr. Donohue obtained a favorable verdict in Federal Court on behalf of a Littleton police officer who was falsely accused of violating an individual's constitutional rights during a traffic stop following an OUI.

      In 2012 and 2013, Mr. Donohue was named a "Rising Star" -- and in 2014 and 2015, a "Super Lawyer" -- by Boston Magazine in the New England Super Lawyers magazine. In 2012, he received an award from the Middlesex District Attorney in recognition of his advocacy and contributions to the Middlesex District Attorney's Pro Bono Domestic Violence Assistance Program, a program in which he is still actively involved. Mr. Donohue was also an integral part of the BHPK team that received the Massachusetts Bar Association's 2011-2012 Access to Justice Award.

      Mr. Donohue is a routine contributor at MCLE New England, most recently chairing a Police Misconduct Litigation seminar in January of 2016. He has also appeared as both a faculty member, presenter, and contributor at numerous other seminars at the MCLE each year.

      Mr. Donohue has been quoted in and has provided legal commentary for The Boston Globe and The Boston Herald, as well as numerous other local media outlets. In 2012, Mr. Donohue was featured as part of an I-Team Investigative Report for WBZ (CBS 4) providing expert analysis on the differences between public and private sector employees who have been accused of misconduct. He has also been published in the Mass. Municipal Lawyers Publication, Municipal Law Quarterly.

      Prior Experience

      Prior to joining BHPK, Mr. Donohue spent over six years as an Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of Boston and gained extensive experience representing public officials and police officers at all stages of civil litigation in both state and federal courts. Mr. Donohue's past experience has been valuable in his representation of municipal clients both in court and before administrative agencies during his tenure at BHPK.

      Following graduation from law school, Mr. Donohue spent a year at Western Massachusetts Legal Services representing domestic violence victims in family law and abuse protection matters.

      Education

      Mr. Donohue received his bachelor's degree in zoology from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 1996, and his law degree from the University of Denver in 1999.

      Professional and Community Affiliations

      Mr. Donohue is admitted to the bar in Massachusetts, the United States District Court of Massachusetts and the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. He is a member of the Federal Bar Association. Mr. Donohue is currently serving a three year term as a Hearing Committee Member for the Massachusetts Board of Bar Overseers
